Celebrity Read 2024

Date and time

Welcome to Celebrity Read 2024

Since 1991, United Way of Greater Newark has hosted Celebrity Read, a program that invites local people to read to elementary school children in the communities we serve. Established in conjunction with news anchor Reggie Harris, the program aimed to highlight the achievements of African Americans during Black History Month. We have continued the tradition and every year during February, hundreds of volunteers read and share life experiences with children in grades Pre-K to 4.

All readers should report to their respective schools at 8:30 am and prepare to stay for approximately 2 hours. In the event of inclement weather and schools are closed, Celebrity Read will be canceled and may not be rescheduled.  If there is a delayed school opening, we will communicate with you to let you know if the event will still take place and the new time if applicable.

All volunteers must be over the age of 18 and must provide ID upon entering school buildings.
Feel free to bring your own books, however, books will be available at each school.
Please adhere to all parking rules as they may vary in each municipality.
If you register and are unable to attend, please contact Karen Leach-Toomer, as soon as possible.
